Children Childrens Ministry

Each component of the day is designed for teams to get to know and invest in the students personally.

Through daily “Park Time,” teams are given the opportunity to engage Operation Exodus students through various sports and recreation activities.

New York City
Operation Exodus

Since 1988, Operation Exodus Inner City, Inc. (Exodus) has been committed to the future of at-risk children from the Washington Heights and Inwood community in New York City. Exodus is a non-profit organization that has its own governing board. MTW has been in partnership with them for over 10 years through sending short-term teams and interns. Operation Exodus Inner City believes that the best way to escape the bonds of poverty is through education, but most of the families in the neighborhoods they serve do not know how to champion their children's progress through the educational system. During the school year and summer, Exodus provides quality out-of-school educational programs at greatly discounted rates to encourage parents to invest in their children's futures. But Exodus also recognizes that nothing can truly transform lives except for Jesus Christ, so in addition to providing academic opportunities, they seek to demonstrate the love of Jesus through caring mentoring relationships and the Word of God.

You don't have to travel far to experience the world's cultures! During a week-long mission trip to New York City, you'll get a different taste of The Big Apple while working with the Hispanic youth in the communities of Washington Heights and Inwood. Volunteering with the after-school program offers the opportunity to build relationships with students during play time, encourage strong study habits, and lead the kids to a fuller understanding of God, all in one afternoon!

Summer volunteers with Operation Exodus get to plan themed curriculum for creative/art classes that will engage students in practical aspects of their studies and help them retain knowledge while not in school. Volunteers also lead classes through lunch, play and worship times, providing many chances to get to know and to invest in the students personally. Please come serve with us this summer and see what God is doing in New York City!

We have opportunities year round on a case by case basis, however, our greatest need is for our Summer Achievement Program Dates: June 22-29, June 29-July 6, July 6-13, July 13-20, July 20-27, July 27-August 3, August 3-10. [top]

How many people do we need to run a trip?

For a summer team, the minimum number of people that we recommend is 10 people. If your team has less than 10 people we will work with you to place you with another small team to serve together.

[top]

How many leaders/adults should we bring?

MTW requires that each team have a five to one youth to adult ratio.

[top]

Can I come as an individual?

Yes, individuals are welcome to apply and once approved will be placed with a team.

[top]

Is the Project Orientation Trip required?

Project Orientation Trip (POT) for 2013 is March 18-20, 2013 in NYC and is required for each summer team leader. Non-summer teams are not required to attend. MTW covers the cost for one team leader per team, with the exception of the team leader’s transportation to and from NYC.  If additional leaders from churches wish to come, they are welcome to do so at an additional cost.  POT begins around 5 p.m. on Monday, March 18 and will finish around lunch on March 20.

[top]

Where will we stay?

Teams are housed in apartments a few blocks from the ministry site and housing is split by gender.  Each apartment holds between six and twelve people and has a variety of beds from air mattresses to bunk beds to queen size beds. Each apartment has a fully functioning kitchen and is equipped with at minimum one shower, two sinks and two toilets.  Apartments are in secure buildings either requiring a key or key code to enter.

[top]

Are all of the meals provided?

Yes, all meals are provided starting with dinner on Saturday night.

[top]

Can you accomodate people with food allergies?

Yes, although we are not able to provide separate, special meals, arrangements can be made with the cook for you to prepare the food you bring.

[top]

What will we be doing as a team?

Spring and Fall Break Teams will be involved in a mixture of light work projects and assisting with the after-school program through tutoring, leading praise and worship time, as well as engaging the students during recreation time.

Summer teams get to plan themed curriculum for creative/art classes that will engage students in practical aspects of their studies and help them retain knowledge while not in school. Volunteers also lead classes through lunch, play, and worship times, providing many chances to get to know and to invest in the students personally.

[top]

Will we be working with other mission teams?

During the summer, we usually have multiple teams per week. However, we usually only assign one team per ministry site except in cases of small teams.  Even though teams will mostly be split between ministry sites, teams are housed at the same location and have dinners together.

[top]

What are the age requirements? Is previous missions experience required?

Senior high age and up. Missions experience helpful and it is encouraged that teams have prior experience working with children from kindergarten through high school and able to manage groups of kids.

[top]

Can you accomodate team members with physical challenges?

This opportunity requires a lot of walking, climbing stairs, being on your feet for hours on end and the difficulty of navigating the city. If someone has minor physical challenges we should be able to accommodate. If you have questions about any specific case or disability, please contact a Project Administrator.

[top]

Are there any discounts available?

No, there are no discounts available.  We maintain a close watch on the budget and do our best to keep it as low as possible, however NYC is an expensive city.

[top]

Where will we worship on Sunday?

Teams will be able to worship at a church of their choice.  Most teams worship at Redeemer Presbyterian, however, there are a variety of churches that we can recommend.

[top]

What does a typical week's schedule look like?

Teams arrive on Saturday. Once teams arrive, they are given time to settle into their apartments, have a brief orientation, then spend the rest of the day sightseeing. Sunday morning worship is followed by a free afternoon. Sunday night dinner will be followed by a detailed orientation at Exodus. Monday through Friday teams will be at Exodus from around 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (including dinner time).

[top]

When are we expected to arrive and depart?

Please arrive after 2 p.m. on Saturday and depart before 11 a.m. the following Saturday.

[top]

Can we come a day early, or stay a day late?

Due to the large volume of teams coming to serve during the summer months, and the need to prepare on a regular basis for each team, we ask that teams limit their time to the dates of their trip. If you would like to come early or stay an additional day in the area for sightseeing or other various activities, the arrangement of lodging, food, and transportation is the team's responsibility.

[top]

What can we do on our day off?

New York City has a never-ending list of opportunities! If you are having trouble choosing an activity, speak with the Project Administrator about options.

[top]

Is transportation provided?

A weekly unlimited subway ticket is provided. However, teams are responsible for their own transportation to and from New York City.

[top]

Is this a family friendly project?

This is not a family friendly project for families with young children. The project is best for high school students and older. There have been a few times that junior high students or young kids have come but it is determined on a case by case basis.

[top]

Who is our host?

Your host will be our Project Administrator, Bobbi Jo Brooks, unless other wise noted.  Bobbi Jo has been working with MTW and Exodus teams for almost eight years.

[top]

Are there any additional expenses for my team?

Your project payment includes food, lodging, a weekly subway pass, and a small ministry fee to go to Exodus. Any special materials your group may need for Creative Time, we ask that you bring those with you, ship in advance or purchase once in the city.  Your team will also be responsible for the cost of any sightseeing expenses.

[top]

What about evenings is there free time? Can we go into the city?

Dinner and clean up are usually over around 7 or 7:30 p.m. After this time your team is on your own.  We highly encourage each team to meet for evening devotions, praise and worship, or debriefing time; this is to be led by your team leader. Because days are long and hot (during the summer), it is not recommended for teams do any sightseeing activities during the week; Friday evenings are the best time for this.
