Donor FAQs

Are gifts to MTW tax deductible?

Gifts and donations made to MTW and designated for MTW ministries are tax deductible. This includes gifts for support of missionaries, special projects or the home office. Non-cash gifts for these purposes are also deductible when handled according to IRS regulations. Gifts made for non-ministry purposes are not tax deductible. For example, if a cash contribution is designated as a birthday or Christmas gift, it is not a tax-deductible gift, but rather a personal gift. (See details in “What is considered a personal gift?" below.)  If you have any questions regarding a specific gift, email pfs@mtw.org or call 1-866373-6133 (local: 678-823-0004 ext. 2451).

How do I send a gift?

Gifts can be made by check or money order and mailed to PO Box 116284, Atlanta, GA 30368-6284. Donations can also be given through our E-Giving program. MTW can automatically deduct specified funds from your checking or saving account, or you can use your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express.

Can you help with estate and gift planning?

MTW has an excellent Estate and Gift Design Department to help you make arrangements for deferred gifts, such as wills, trust annuities, or a withdrawal gift agreement. You can receive more information by contacting EstateGift@mtw.org or 678-823-0004 ext. 2291.

What is an E-Giving program?

E-Giving makes it possible to have your monthly gift automatically deducted from your checking or savings account, or to use your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express cards. E-giving donors also receive receipts by email. This process is usually easier for donors and saves administrative costs and postage for MTW. Click here to download the E-Giving form.

How do I support a missionary?

The easiest way is to search for them on the MTW donation site to make a one-time or recurring gift using your credit card. You can also contact Partner Financial Services for detailed information: pfs@mtw.org or call 1-866-373-6133 (local: 678-823-0004 ext. 2451).

How do I find out the financial needs of a missionary?

Please email SupportNeeds@mtw.org or you may call 678-823-0004 ext. 2308.

How does MTW acknowledge my gifts?

Those using our online donation web site will receive an email confirmation after the transaction and later, an email acknowledgement from MTW Partner Financial Services after the donation is processed.

For offline donations, Partner Financial Services mails a receipt to each donor after a gift is received. The receipt has a detachable bottom portion that can be sent in a return envelope with your next contribution. (An emailed receipt will be sent to E-Giving partners.) The receipt will indicate if the gift is tax deductible or non-tax deductible in accordance with IRS regulations.

How do I send my gift if I have misplaced my receipt?

Those who have setup an online donor account will not need their receipt.

Send your check and a short note listing the missionary or missionaries you support and how the funds are to be allocated. You may note this on the check if there is space. If you have any questions, you may contact Partner Financial Services at pfs@mtw.org or call 1-866-373-6133 (local: 678-823-0004 ext. 2451).

How can I request a duplicate receipt?

Call, write, or email  pfs@mtw.org, and our staff will assist you.

How does MTW acknowledge or receipt my non-cash gift?

Gifts-in-kind are acknowledged through a gift-in-kind receipt. MTW cannot state a value or place a value for such gifts, but we can help you meet IRS regulations to substantiate your deduction.

How can I be sure my gift will go to the right missionary project?

MTW honors the designations of our partners. However, for legal and tax reasons, all gifts to MTW are under the control of our governing committee and subject to our policies. We will see that your gift is properly applied, and your receipt will include this information. You can contact us with any questions at pfs@mtw.org or call 1-866-373-6133 (local: 678-823-0004 ext. 2451).

How much are MTW administrative fees?

All funds designated for a missionary or missionary projects are credited to that missionary or project account. The average administrative fee for missionaries is 12% and the fee for projects is 7.5%.

How are the administrative fees used?

The administrative fee helps pay part of the costs of providing support services to our missionaries. These costs include, but are not limited to, receiving and managing financial gifts, managing their benefit package plans, managing the missionary’s complex monthly payroll needs, maintaining missionary mailing lists and sending prayer letters, providing assistance with pre-field and furlough activities, reimbursement of ministry expenses, recruiting, training, and shepherding missionaries, helping with international government requirements and with strategic planning. This fee only covers approximately 75% of the cost for these services. The remainder comes from Partnership Shares. (Partnership Shares are monies given annually from PCA churches and based on a dollar amount per church member that is set by General Assembly. Individual donors also contribute to these funds, which are used for general missionary support.)

How is MTW held accountable for handling my gifts?

MTW operates under the authority of Committee on Mission to the World (CMTW) appointed by the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) General Assembly. We prepare financial statements that are audited annually by an independent audit firm. We use board-approved standard operating policies and procedures to assure the proper use of funds. MTW considers effective use of ministry resources a matter of stewardship responsibility before God and accuracy in reporting and fundraising to be a matter of integrity. MTW is a member of ECFA.

What does MTW do with my name and address information?

MTW is committed to protect the identity of its partners. We do not share or rent our list of contributors or other parties with any other organization, including other committees and agencies of the PCA.

What is considered a “personal” gift?

Personal gifts (Christmas, birthday, bereavement travel and special offerings):  A personal gift is monies received with instructions to give the funds to the missionary personally and indicates the donor does not expect a tax-deductible receipt.

Due to possible IRS complications for not reporting taxable income properly when churches give personal gifts, the following procedures will apply:

1.         If the gift is small and year to date personal gifts from each particular church for a particular missionary total less than $600 (or the latest limit set by the IRS), the gift will be processed normally.

2.         If the personal gift or year to date personal gifts from a particular church for a particular missionary total over $600, we will contact the church for clarifications and instructions as follows:

a.   Clarify with the church that the funds are coming from the church and not a service unit that does not give receipts.  If from a service unit that does not issue receipts, it will be treated as if it is from an individual (allows up to $10,000 per year, or the latest limit set by the IRS).

b.   If the gift is from a church, we will instruct the church that our auditors have requested that such personal gift be written to the individual, and  we will see that it gets deposited into their personal checking account.

Other personal gift checks received from individuals should be made payable to MTW and clearly marked as a personal gift, i.e., Christmas gift, birthday gift or special offering etc., indicating the donor does not expect a tax deduction receipt.
